A tour de force of a piece that rings of undeniable truth by Ido Singer and thank you to Dr. Martin for publishing it! Let’s be clear here, Israel exists because the Jewish people have nowhere else on Earth to go. Europeans persecuted, discriminated, did programs against, made second-class citizens of, and expelled Jews. Arab Muslims treated them as second-class citizens and made them pay the Jizya tax for not recognizing Muhammad as their final prophet. During the Holocaust no Western nation would admit them.

The United States, Great Britain, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, and many others all denied them entry. In Palestine, Jews who already lived there were told to “go back to Europe!” While Germans told Jews in Germany to “go back to Palestine!” They couldn’t win either way. So their ancient homeland Israel was the only choice they had. After the Holocaust, this became abundantly clear. Englishman, Frenchman, Germans, Italians, Poles, Russians, Hungarians, Romanians, Ukrainians, and others had historically treated Jews like s***. Why would they want to stay in Europe?

Arab countries were hostile to Jews and let’s not forget the Holocaust wasn’t just in Europe but in North Africa too. There were concentration camps in Morocco, Tunisia and Libya too. By the way, many, many local Arabs assisted the Germans and Italians in rounding up their Jewish neighbors. Thousands of Arabs and black Africans fought in the Wehrmacht’s Free Arabian Legion. Many Arabs greeted the Afrika Korps as liberators when they arrived in North Africa and did the sieg heil. They saw Hitler as their liberating hero rescuing them from British and French colonial rule. Mien Kampf is still to this day, a bestseller in the West Bank and Gaza and across the Middle East.

Many former Nazis fled to the Arab countries after WWII and were employed by their governments. Former Nazis also volunteered to fight alongside the Arab armies against the newborn state of Israel in 1948. Postwar Europe by the way wasn’t the most friendly or welcoming place for Jews. In Eastern Europe, pogroms against Jews were widespread. In particular, in Poland where violence against Jews was pretty commonplace following the war. In Germany, many people saw Jewish DPs as free loaders and living reminders of a time in their history they wanted to forget. Make no mistake about it, antisemitism in Germany continued long after the war ended and Nazism had been defeated and Hitler and his henchmen toppled from power. Former Nazis were welcomed with open arms in Spain and Latin America.

Nor did America or Britain wish to take any Jewish DPs. So the birth of the state of Israel was academic. Zionism wasn’t popular with global Jewry before the Holocaust but it was after it after. They realized Theodor Herzl had been right all along. Western and liberal values on their own were NOT enough to protect the Jewish people from destruction. Many Jews went to Israel because they longed for Zion. But this wasn’t the case for everyone. Many Jews also came because they had no other choice. Mizrahi Jews for example were brutally expelled from Arab countries like Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Morocco, and Tunisia and didn’t have the money or resources to go the United States or Europe because that was taken away from them when they fled by Arab governments. So Israel was their one and only choice in order to find a safe place to just exist.
