With Diego Garcia, and friendly governments in Malaysia and the South Pacific, we can also do a good job of controlling shipping between the Indian and Pacific as well.
And not just the Northwest Passage: the Northern Sea Route also. Nothing China sends north of Russia -- freight, submarines, whatever -- is getting past the GIUK Gap now unless we say so.

It perfectly explained why the Tripartite Pact between the United States, Greenland and Denmark is the deal of the century and yet another feather in President Trump's cap on foreign policy. Greenland's Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen was 100% correct when she said the world has changed a great deal since 1951. Russia and China can infiltrate the Western Hemisphere through Greenland, use Greenland as a base of operation and exploit Greenland's rich mineral wealth. Now that will never happen. The United States has officially locked them out of Greenland.
The security arrangement between the two countries is now perpetual meaning forever. U.S. rights on the island will continue after Greenland's independence. The U.S. can now expand its military presence on the island and build more bases. Non-NATO bases on the island are now prohibited meaning the Chinese and the Russians will NOT be allowed to have a military presence in Greenland. The United States will have a veto over non-NATO countries over critical mineral mining or sensitive investments. Greenland has also given their full support for the Golden Dome. Donald Trump never wanted to conquer Greenland nor annex. This is the deal he wanted and he got it done.
Will Greenland join the United States? Not as a state, but I do believe eventually the United States and Greenland will sign a compact of free association. Greenland wants to be independent which is completely understandable as Denmark has always treated Greenland and its people really badly. But it can't afford it, so it makes complete sense they make such an arrangement with the United States. That's a deal that would make everyone involved rich.
