What the Left Thinks About Conservatives

These people really hate us. And the growing divide is daunting.

Leftist author Jane Smiley writes her take on why America voted for George W. Bush, two days after his landslide re-election.  It was published in Slate, not as a one-off but as part of a series by hand-picked "wise liberals" about why the left has lost five of the past seven presidential elections.

What she writes is...shocking.  Not because we haven't heard it a million times before.  Not even because it is so self-evidently false in virtually every particular.  But because in reading it, it hits you that she -- and millions of others like her -- honestly believe it.  And it's not just ideological.  No, these people really, genuinely hate us.
