This is an article that is over two decades old, but yet it is still as relevant as ever. Germany is a great country with much in its history to be proud of. Germany gave the world Bach, Beethoven, Goethe, hamburgers, hot dogs, warm apple strudel, Werther’s Original caramel candy, Black Forest cake, pork schnitzel, spaetzle, polka music, brats, beer, Charlemagne, Fredrick the Great, Otto von Bismarck, The Weimar Republic, the model Prussian Army, Martin Luther, Johannes Gutenberg and the improved printing press, Albert Einstein, Mercedes-Benz, BMWs, Volkswagens, Sophie Scholl and the White Rose Resistance Movement, Count Claus von Stauffenberg, Martin Luther and the Reformation, Christmas trees, Easter bunnies, Immanuel Kant, the Brothers Grimm, Marklin and LGB toy trains, Konrad Adenauer, and Willy Brandt. But Germany also has in its history atrocities against the Herero and Nama people of Namibia, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, the T-4 program, the sterilization of mixed-race children, throwing political dissenters and labor unions in contraction camps, the Holocaust, numerous war crimes, the abuse of Allied POWs especially Russian, Jewish and African-American POWS, and discrimination against mixed race children, Jewish DPs, foreign guest workers, and Turks in the Postwar era.

The American South needs to realize this as well. There is much good AND bad to be found in the region’s history. The South is a beautiful part of America with stunning scenery, delicious food, terrific alcoholic beverages, courteous people, amazing history, vibrant and diverse cultures, and hallowed accents. The South gave America and the world George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Mason, James Madison, James Monroe, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr., The Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, and Rock N’ Roll music, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Little Richard, fried chicken, grits, biscuits and gravy, Cajun food, beignets, peach cobbler, fried pies, Coca Cola, key lime pie, Disneyworld, Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, amazing sports and countless amazing athletes, moon pies, NASCAR, Jim Bean, the Kentucky Derby, Mint Juleps, and much more. Not to mention the South is the most patriotic and pious region of this country.

But the American South also has in its history chattel slavery, Jim Crow, horrific racial violence, lynching, poll taxes, literacy tests, grandfather clauses, laws against interracial marriage, the Ku Klux Klan and other whites supremacist organizations, protests against school desegregation, the Tuskegee Experiment, and much more. Southerners should be proud of the brave men of the Confederate Army and Navy who wore the hallowed butternut and gray, proudly fly the Confederate flag and proudly publicly display Confederate Monuments. They should continue to celebrate Robert E. Lee’s birthday. They should tout the good things about the Antebellum South. Also, let’s be clear here. The Confederates were NOT traitors, secession was legal and the South was right when it invoked states’ rights in the postwar era. But there are parts of the South’s past that should not ever be celebrated nor should apologia for them ever be done.

The racism, antisemitism and anti-Catholicism in the South’s past is NOT to justified or glorified! There is no reason anyone should celebrate things like the lynching of Leo Frank in 1915, the brutal murder of Emmett Till in 1955 or the violence inflicted on Mexicans and Mexican-Americans by the Texas Rangers in the 19th and 20th centuries for example. All these apologetic arguments for slavery mentioned in this article are ridiculous. Yes, there were a small number of free black slave owners. Yes, there were a small number of blacks who served in the Confederate Army and Navy. But neither of these points makes slavery in America any better or justifies it. It simply adds another layer of complexity to the subject but it does not somehow erase the fact it was morally wrong. Racism is any form and against anyone is wrong. It is also un-American and un-Christian. The Bible clearly states that we are all one in God. White, black, brown, red, or yellow, male or female, Protestant or Catholic, Jew or Gentile, gay or straight, able-bodied or disabled, we are all equal in the eyes of God. Jesus died on the cross for all of us. He died to absolve ALL people of our sins! Furthermore, the third commandment clearly states that one will not misuse or misinterpret scripture. That’s exactly what racists who claim to be Christian are doing. As to those who use the Bible to justify slavery, first off, have you ever even read the Exodus story and how God punished Egypt for holding the Israelites as slaves.

They also must never have read the New Testament which has passages that explicitly condemn slavery. They will often invoke a passage in the Bible talking about one being a good servant to his master. But this refers NOT to slavery but to a paid worker. The Bible also was used to provide a defense of racial segregation. But this too is nonsense. Nowhere in the Bible does it say people should be separated from each other or treated as unequal because of the skin color. What The Bible DOES tell us to do is to love everyone regardless of race or color! Southerners should be proud of their heritage, but not everything about it. I would like to thank Dr. Martin for writing this piece!
