The biggest asteroid to hit Earth in recorded history vanished without a trace: How? | Live Science

Earth is getting hit by a lot more stuff with a lot more force than anyone previously thought.  And no one is paying attention.

For perspective: The bomb dropped over Hiroshima had 15 kilotons of energy — the asteroid that appeared over Russia last year exploded with almost/up to 600 kilotons of energy.

It's a big planet:  most of the places things can hit aren't populated and go unnoticed.  But what if that asteroid had hit Moscow?  Or New York?  And what if either country's military had mistaken it for a nuclear attack?  There might not be anyone left to pay attention.

Ed Lu says that he quit at Google "because we weren’t doing anything big enough.” “All of this is funded by private enterprise. What could you do? Aviation and computer engineering weren’t pushed forward by government."

What’s the cost? Ed says: We can build Sentinel for the same amount of money to build a large freeway overpass. Should we be scared? No. We should be inspired to go out and solve this. -- RDM
